The National Fire Protection Association records show there were 10,600 reported fires in warehouses and self-storage facilities between 1999 and 2002. The safest and ultimately most cost effective solution would be to install an automatic fire sprinkler system throughout the self-storage buildings. This offers a high level of protection to the building and contents by either extinguishing a developing fire or confining it to the unit of origin.

Fire at Lake Forest storage facility damages 60 units Sunday, August 27, 2006

LAKE FOREST -- A fire in a two-story self-storage facility early this morning damaged 60 units and took more than three hours and 70 firefighters to control, a fire official said. The blaze at the Trabuco Self- Storage & RV Center, at 25301 Trabuco Road, broke out at 4:20 a.m.  At 11 a.m., the fire was still smoking, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Stephen Miller.

A firefighter suffering from minor injuries was taken to a local hospital, Miller said. The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.  Miller said the fire started on a lower level of the facility, which has about 1,000 units. “It’s a mess,’’ he said. Officials said firefighters would be on hand today to help victims extricate their belongings, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

A fire Friday in Ventura destroyed 15 mini-storage units, caused $1 million in damage and left only charred remains of some tenants' important belongings. The fire was spotted at 5:50 a.m. by someone driving by the Public Storage center at 5515 Walker St., near the Golf N' Stuff entertainment center.

A fire that began in a rental unit of a self-storage building quickly spread throughout the structure, destroying it.

The single-story building, which measured 120 by 50 feet (36.6 by 15.2 meters), had concrete block walls and an unprotected steel roof It contained 46 storage units of various sizes, many of which could be entered either through exterior overhead doors or from two interior corridors. The structure had no sprinklers or detectors.
